Project Summary |
The Survey Project of Bronze Age Harbours in the Çanakkale Strait is an ongoing archaeological survey in the Merkez, Lapseki, Eceabat and Gelibolu Districts of Çanakkale Province and Şarköy District of Tekirdağ Province since 2021 with the permission of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Thanks to its location and geographical features that connect and separate the continents and seas, the Çanakkale Strait has been a mandatory transit area for people on the move throughout the ages. The Bronze Age, which is the research period of the project and covers a period of approximately 2000 years, refers to a period in which intercultural communication networks were used systematically and organized for the first time in the region and thus a central authority emerged. For these reasons, the project focuses on revealing the role of the Çanakkale Strait, which was chosen as the research site, in intercultural communication networks during the Bronze Age. In this project, based on the material culture of prehistoric settlements in and around the Strait, the relative dating of each settlement is made and indicators of intercultural communication are analyzed. Then, socio-cultural-economic changes and developments in the region during different periods are evaluated. These assessments provide information on social phenomena such as the cultural zone boundary, the relationship between social organization between settlements and regions, trade between distant regions, and human mobility between regions. The project is a regional research project in which archaeological data are evaluated from a holistic, processual perspective and carried out using interdisciplinary methods. |

Project Summary |
This study has been prepared in line with the aims and objectives of The Survey Project of Bronze Age Harbours in the Çanakkale Strait. Thanks to this project, which was accepted by Fırat University Scientific Research Projects (FÜBAP) commission, the fieldwork, archaeological material drawing and mapping studies of the archaeological survey for the year 2023 were financially supported. Thanks to the project, the fieldwork of the survey in 2023 was carried out, the data obtained from the field were examined, archaeological drawings were made, and 3D models were produced from the photographs of the settlements taken by drone. Thus, an important step has been taken in our research to reveal the role of the Çanakkale Strait, which has a strategic position in terms of human history, in prehistoric periods. Using the data obtained during the project, the project was completed in 2024 with the publication of the article “Early Bronze Age Clay Anchors and Hooks Examples from the Gallipoli Peninsula”. |

Project Summary |
Integration of Remote Sensing Methods into the Prehistoric Archaeology of the Gallipoli Peninsula project aims to evaluate the archaeological data obtained in the Gallipoli Peninsula between 2021-2023 of The Survey Project of Bronze Age Harbours in the Çanakkale Strait with the methods of earth sciences and remote sensing experts and to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on the data. In this context, while the archaeological material was examined with archaeological methods, the methods of geomorphology, geology and remote sensing disciplines were applied to examine the environment and human interactions and changes, modeling and mapping for new settlement proposals, documentation and measurement of destruction. Thus, it was aimed to support and validate the archaeological data with interdisciplinary methods and to increase the scientific value of the archaeological project in question. Therefore, this project is about a study in which the archaeological data obtained from the Gallipoli Peninsula within the scope of the survey of the Bronze Age Harbours in the Canakkale Strait are evaluated with the approaches and methods of earth sciences. |
