General Information
Foundation History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Fırat University Faculty of Letters was established on April 1, 1975 with the law no. 1873. The Faculty Board of the Faculty of Letters held its first meeting on 05.12.1975. The Department of Anthropology was opened in the 1976-1977 academic year in the Faculty of Letters, which started education with the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, and on February 25, 1980, this faculty: Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Geography, Ancient Near-Asian Languages, Librarianship, History, Social Sciences, It was decided that it would consist of ten departments: Turkish Language and Literature and Foreign Languages Departments.
With the Law No. 2809 dated 28.03.1983 regarding the amendment and acceptance of the Decree Law No. 41 on the Organization of Higher Education Institutions, the Faculties of Science and Letters were merged and transformed into the "Faculty of Science and Letters". Later; In accordance with the Decision of the Council of Ministers No. 2010/175, which came into force after being published in the Official Gazette No. 27518 dated March 11, 2010, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences within our University was closed and the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences were established instead.
As of today, our Faculty continues its education and training activities with two programs, German Language and Literature and English Language and Literature, within the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, and the departments of Geography, Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures, Sociology, History and Turkish Language and Literature. The Departments of Art History, Eastern Languages and Literatures and Translation and Interpreting are open and will begin education and training in the coming years when conditions are met. For now, only Art History, education and training departments that meet the requirements will apply. The Department of Archeology was closed in 2021.
Department of Art History
In accordance with the Decision of the Council of Ministers No. 2010/175, which came into force after being published in the Official Gazette No. 27518 dated March 11, 2010, the Faculty of Science and Letters within Fırat University was closed and the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences were established. The inclusion of departments and departments within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in the newly established Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was examined at the Higher Education Executive Board meeting dated 07/04/2010 and in accordance with Article 7d-2 of Law No. 2547, amended by Law No. 2880, Humanitarian and Social Sciences It was deemed appropriate for the Faculty of Social Sciences to consist of Archaeology, Western Languages and Literatures, Geography, History, Turkish Language and Literature, Art History and Sociology Departments. Among these departments, it was deemed appropriate for the Department of Art History to consist of the Department of Turkish and Islamic Art.
The Department of Art History at Fırat University was first opened in 1980 within the Faculty of Letters. Later, the Department of Art History within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has been operating with the following Departments since 2010.
1-Turkish and Islamic Art Department
Mission: To raise the awareness in our students that they will research the rich historical remains of our country, reveal them at a scientific level, and protect them by seeing archaeological finds as cultural values originating from these lands, not as a source of financial gain, and that they should be protected, in the light of universal values, and to be individuals who are equipped and have the ability to use contemporary technologies in their professions that our country needs, in the light of universal values. It is the mission of our department to educate and to present the production of our academic staff in the fields of scientific research, teaching and service for the benefit of society.
Vision: It is the vision of our department to contribute to our country rising above the level of contemporary civilization through the education it will provide in national and international academic platforms and the scientific studies it will produce.
Objectives: Archaeology; By conducting education within a wide scientific spectrum and providing theoretical and practical courses, as well as participation of archeology department students in seminars and activities organized for this purpose, we provide our students with the ability to examine, analyze, discuss and develop interpretations based on scientific evidence, concepts, ideas and data related to the discipline of archeology with social science research methods. The main objectives of the department are to provide students with skills and an effective view, to train qualified researchers who preserve movable and immovable cultural assets and all kinds of archaeological objects and works of art made by man, as well as individuals who are aware of the cultural values of our country, protect our cultural heritage and have the understanding of evaluating them in every field. among its aims.
The main goal of our department is; To prepare our students for the future with qualified studies and research, equipped with contemporary knowledge, and to enable our graduates to participate in domestic and international studies, to become competent archaeologists who can bring to light the cultural assets of our country with scientific methods, and who also know how to preserve and exhibit these works in our museums with modern methods.
Program Outcomes: With a bachelor's degree, you can work in public institutions, universities, T.R. Graduate students who will have the opportunity to work in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the private sector, public works projects, private museums and local governments can increase their chances with their postgraduate diplomas. Our students who take part in the program, which aims to provide education quality at international standards in subjects related to archaeology, will be able to reinforce the courses they have taken in the department library and laboratory environment during the academic year, and will have the opportunity to improve themselves by participating in excavations and surface research.
At the same time, our students, in addition to doing homework and research within the scope of courses, have the opportunity to collaborate with European universities with which our university has relations and complete theses and receive training on classical and prehistoric-protohistoric archeology, equipped with contemporary knowledge.
